Imagination—here the Power so called Through sad incompetence of human speech, That awful Power rose from the mind's abyss Like an unfathered vapour that enwraps, At once, some lonely traveller. I was lost; Halted without an effort to break through; But to my conscious soul I now can say— "I recognise thy glory:" in such strength Of usurpation, when the light of sense Goes out, but with a flash that has revealed The invisible world, doth greatness make abode, There harbours; whether we be young or old, Our destiny, our being's heart and home, Is with infinitude, and only there; With hope it is, hope that can never die, Effort, and expectation, and desire, And something evermore about to be. Under such banners militant, the soul Seeks for no trophies, struggles for no spoils That may attest her prowess, blest in thoughts That are their own perfection and reward, Strong in herself and in beatitude(supreme happiness) That hides her, like the mighty flood of Nile Poured from his fount of Abyssinian clouds To fertilise the whole Egyptian plain. ( VI. 593-617, 1850) 상상력이여, 여기에선 사람의 언어가 가진 딱한 한계 때문에 그렇게 부를 수밖에 없구나. 그대의 경외로운 힘은 정신의 심연에서 솟아났다. 어떤 외로운 여행자를 순식간에 감싸는아비없는 물안개처럼. 나는 길을 잃었다. 뚫고 나가려고 애쓰지도 않고 멈춰섰다. 하지만 이제 나는 내가 의식하는 내 영혼에게 말할 수 있다. “나는 그대의 영광을 인정한다”라고. 왕위를 찬탈하는 그런 위세로, 감각의 빛이 꺼졌을 때, 하지만 보이지 않는 세계를 드러내는 순간적인 불빛이 보여준다. 그대의 위대한 존재의 집이 그곳이고, 거기에 거주하고 있음을. 젊은이든 늙은 이든 상관없이 우리의 운명, 우리 존재의 심장과 고향집은 무한한 세계에 있고, 오로지 거기에만 있음을. 그것은 희망, 결코 없어질 수 없는 희망과 함께 있고 노력과 기대, 욕망, 그리고 늘 곧 도래할 어떤 것과 공존한다. 그렇게 씩씩한 깃발을 내걸었지만, 영혼은 상패를 바라지도, 전리품을 위해 싸우지 않는다. 그것들로 용맹함을 입증할 수도 있겠지만, 영혼은 이미 완벽함이고 그 자체가 보상이라는 생각으로 축복받는다. 그 자체로 강하며, 지극한 행복에 싸여있다. 이집트 평원 전체에 양분을 주기위해 태고의 구름 속 원천에서 흘러나온 강력한 나일강의 홍수에 (이집트가) 싸여있듯이.
