Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the history and culture of Britain. Many aspects of the contemporary British society will be examined and discussed in class, but it is not realistic to expect a complete understanding of the culture and history of a country in a single semester. Therefore, our survey of British history and culture will be highly selective and limited into a series of ¡°fundamentals¡± of the contemporary British society. The class discussion will be primarily based on the textbook, but the additional reading materials will also be provided. Students are strongly recommended to make use of multimedia materials available on the Web.
Text: David McDowall, Britain in Close-Up: An In-Depth Study of Contemporary Britain, Longman/Pearson Education Limited, 1999.
Evaluation: Group Projects 20%, Individual Research Project 20%, Class Participation and Quizzes 30%, Final Exam 30%
Group Projects & Individual research project: 4 people will make 1 group which is responsible for one 20-30 minute presentation. Each group will be given at the beginning of the semester one topic that should be researched and presented at the later part of the semester in a hypertext format. Internet connection and Web editor ¡°Namo¡± will be made available in the class and the classroom with computer facilities(512) will be reserved all day for this class on every Friday. From the fourth week, each student is required to present the result of her own research projects for twenty minutes. Each presentation should be ¡°digitalized¡± to whatever extent.
Quizzes and Final Exam: Pop-quizzes and one final exam will be taken during the semester.

Topical Issues in English: Literature in the Information Age(35572-02)

Course Description: This course is designed as a part of a pilot project to promote the use of information technology within the curriculum of the humanities. This class has three sub-sections: the first is entitled "Literature in the Age of Internet" where a couple of introductory lectures will be given about a hypertext theory, humanities computing and the fate of literature in the age of internet. Students will also have a chance to learn how to create HTML documents using the program such as Namo. In the second section "Digitalizing British Romantic Poetry", students will be given the five most typical lyrics of British Romantic poetry as the raw material to "digitalize." What is meant by "digitalizing a poem" is yet to be established throughout this class. What is clear from the very beginning, however, is that it is not a mechanical rendering of literary works but a hermeneutic process of literature in itself. Five poems of the British romanticism, therefore, will be read in depth and students will be introduced to a series of academic documents concerning the poems such as various editions of poetic texts, biographies, contemporary criticisms, audio and video materials, etc. Students should thoroughly familiarize themselves with all those academic "data" so that they could "use" them freely in their projects. In the third section, other digital projects concerning literature will be critically reviewed, and "benchmarked" if necessary. At the end of the term, each group will present their own homepage containing a digitalized version of the given poems.
