이 그림의 부제는 1830년 7월 28일로 복고 왕정에 반대하여 일어선 시민들이 3일간의 시가전 끝에 부르봉왕가를 넘어뜨리고 루이 필립을 국왕으로 맞은 7월 혁명을 주제로 한 것이다. 전진하는 여인상 왼쪽에 검은 색 모자를 쓰고 총을 쥐고 있는 인물은 들라크르와 자화상으로 알려짐.
