if we be originally possessed of much sensibility, such habits of mind will be produced, that, by obeying blindly and mechanically the impulses of those habits, we shall describe objects, and utter sentiments, of such a nature, and in such connection with each other, that the understanding of the being to whom we address ourselves, if be in a healthful state of association, must necessarily be in some degree enlightened, and his affections ameliorated.
만일 우리가 원래 충분한 감수성의 소유자라면, 어떤 마음의 버릇들이 만들어지게 될 것이다. 그 버릇들이 가져오는 충동들을 무조건 기계적으로 따르기만 해도 우리는 일정한 본질을 가진, 그리고 일정한 상호관련 속에 있는 대상들을 특정한 방식으로 묘사하고 특정한 방식으로 그 감성을 표현하게 될 것이다. 그러한 특정한 방식의 묘사와 표현의 결과, 우리는 우리가 대하는 존재, 즉 독자들이, 건강한 방식으로 연상작용을 할 수 있는 상태에 있기만 하다면, 반드시 자신의 인식을 어느 정도 계몽시키고, 그의 감정도 개선할 수 있게 되는 것이다.
