Quiz I

Explain the context meaning of the following passages within 30 words each.

1. ¡°He never mentioned it,¡± she said, ¡°because I never let him mention it before you children. Your Daddy was like a crazy man that night and for many a night thereafter. He says he never in his life seen anything as dark as that road after the lights of that car had gone away.

This is from Sonny's Blues. The narrator's mother is recollecting a painful memory of her brother-in-law's tragic car accident where he was run over by a group of white young men who simply ran away after the accident. The narrator's mother gave this story to his elder son to explain why he had to take care of his own younger brother more closely.

2. The silence of the next few days must have been louder than the sound of all the music ever played since time began. One morning, before she went to work, Isabel was in his room for something and she suddenly realized that all of his rec ords were gone. And she knew for certain that he was gone.

This is also from Sonny's Blues. Sonny, who had been taken into the care of Isabel's family, left it without any message. Isabel, the narrator's fiance, did her best to provide Sonny with a safe environment where he could grow up as a normal boy, but Sonny's drug problem(along with his desire to become a jazz musician) was too serious to be settled with such arrangement.

3. Freedom lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we would listen, that he would never be free until we did. Yet, there was no battle in his face now, I heard what he had gone through, and would continue to go through until he came to rest in earth.

This is also from Sonny's Blues. The narrator here finally comes to understand what music means to Sonny and what he could do with his music. Hearing the music, the narrator now understands that Sonny, through his performance, could give a consolation not only to himself but to all others who would willingly accept his music.

4. ¡°Come,¡± I said, with decision, ¡°we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchresi——¡±

This is from The Cask of Amontillado. This dialogue takes place when Montresor allures Fortunato into the crypt of his own house to bury him alive. Montresor pretends to be worried about Fortunato's health by offering to postpone the visit to crypt, but his seemingly kind offer was nothing more than a trick to prevent Fortunato's possible hesitation. Montresor slyly mentions Luchresi to stimulate Fortunato's sense of rivalry with Luchresi.

5. He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much. The man wore motley. He had on a tight- fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells. I was so pleased to see him that I should never have done wringing his hand.

This is also from The Cask of Amontillado. This passage describes Montresor's first meeting with Fortunato. This seemingly coincidental meeting was in face carefully staged in advance by Montresor. The fool's costume, worn by Fortunato, preshadows that he will play a fool at the hands of Montresor in the following actions.
