Romanticism and Modern Literature(36151-01)

Fall 2020

Chankil Park(ckpark@ewha.ac.kr, 316 Humanities Bd., Office Hour: by Appointment, Tel: 02-3277-2160)

Class: Online by Zoom, Tue 12:30-13:45/ Fri 14:00-15:15.

Course Description: This is an introductory lecture on the literary works produced in Britain during the Romantic period in which the idea of modernity was first conceived. The canonical poems by the six major poets are still the main targets of course, but they will be explored in the context of the modernity that has expressed itself in all aspects of British society after the French Revolution. Main emphasis falls on a close reading of the key texts such as "London," "Tintern Abbey," and "Ode to a Nightingale," but they will be read more as a part of artistic expression of the modern mind we still share in the 21st century.

Text: Norton Anthology II(8th edition) or any other downloadable texts from electronic sources

Evaluation: Attendance and Class Participation 10%, Papers 10%, Mid-term Exam 40%, Final Exam 40%. Both exams will be taken "online" the details of which will be explained in the introductory lecture.

Attendance and Tardiness: Attendance will be automatically checked by the Zoom report menu. If you have any technical problem, let me know immediately. Failing to attend the class 10 times or more will automatically result in F. Being late more than 10 minutes will count as a late attendance and two late attendances will count as one absence.
